Thursday, July 6, 2023 Deadbolt Island

A gentle rain started last night about 2:00 AM. It was so gentle that I did not need to close Annie's porthole windows. I checked the forecast when I got up and it looks like an all day rain. Environment Canada said we would have high winds today, while the Weather Channel said light winds. Once again the Weather Channel was correct, at least for our local area. Some big storms did go marching by. The sun did pop out about 8:00 PM and it was beautiful on Deadbolt Island.

The batteries were a little lower than normal today, 65%, when I rolled out of bed. I switched on the generator, the coffee pot and the ice maker in that order. Annie's batteries are 10 years old now, and still doing well, but I plan to replace them this winter. Our refrigerator needs to be defrosted so I think it is using amore power than normal.

We plan to stay here today and tonight. We will likely move tomorrow, although I am not sure where at this time. Possibilities include a new anchorage called Keyhole Inlet, the real popular Covered Portage or even Killarney. We are at the red arrow on the right of the following screen shot.

A day at anchor in the rain can be pretty pleasant and restful, although I would not want too many of those. I read, adjusted our pilot house screen doors, stopped a leak in the pilot house hatch, checked the generator and engine fluids, etc. Last year we always had a loaf of frozen bread to bake on days like this, but the bakery in the grocery in Tobermory would not sell us any this year so I missed that treat today. Here is how quiet it was in the anchorage today. No boats came or left.

Kerry was up before 12:30 PM and fixed me a nice brunch of egg salad and fruit. We relaxed and read Baldacci books most of the afternoon. After our happy hour I fixed bacon and eggs for dinner. I fried the bacon and it was excellent. Usually I cook it in the microwave, but today's version was the best.

Members at the yacht club want the Ship's Store to get a burgee decal. I have been working on a design.  Below is a proof. There would be two stickers, one with front facing adhesive (for inside of a window) and one with adhesive on the back. I'm trying to decide if it should print Vermilion Yacht Club or VYC, or nothing as it is now.

Every time we have a day without sun I am reminded of how important my solar panels are to battery management. I always end up running the generator significantly more on cloudy days. On a sunny day, I pretty much go all day without any decrease in battery amperage.

Peter said they are likely to stay in Killarney for another evening tomorrow. We plan to go to Covered Portage and will spend the weekend there if we get in. It's very popular so we may or may not get a spot. I'll need a plan B. We'll stop at Killarney to fuel, pumpout and get some water for the tanks on the way to Covered Portage. We'll likely see the Orros there. I plan to pull anchor about 8:30.

  1. i was not able to post a comment yesterday. The two days of 90 degree heat are behind us and we are back to enjoying high 70's. you should have gone with the Orros to Killarney and stayed at the Killarney Mountain Lodge. The new docks are nice and the food is good. I was there several years ago with my son Will and 7 grandchildren. We had a great time and enjoyed eating off of tableclothes! KIP
