Saturday, July 8, 2023 Covered Portage.

I slept in to almost 8:00. The bed was so comfortable and since I had nothing on my agenda today there was no reason to get up early. Well, other than the harassment I get from Big Jim when the blog is not posted as early as he thinks it should be. Here's a picture of Big Jim on the right, and of his good friend, Mikey, at breakfast.

Peter supplied a Starlink update. He spoke to a boater with one in Killarney who was highly satisfied with his Starlink. He had the small dish which is considerably smaller and less complicated than the high performance one. He discovered an article stating that there is a new dish coming out soon that will be about the size of an apple laptop. It keeps getting better!

Voyager arrived about 11:00. There were many spots available. I don't think I have ever seen this place as empty as it is today. I wonder why? Boats did drift in, but it was not quite half full at the end of the day. The Orros docked near a beautiful granite rock setting. Marianna looks glad to be here.

Shortly after his arrival, Peter came over with a loaf of freshly baked bread. There is nothing Kerry likes better. He earned a cappuccino with whipped cream and chocolate syrup. Kerry wanted one too once she saw Peter's. Peter and I had to caution her that the limited number of cappuccinos on board were designated for the captains and that she should not count on one everyday. Peter invited us to dinner tonight on Voyager.

We made plans to fish early tomorrow, and then climb the granite walls sometime during the day. We also discussed the fine art of anchoring far enough offshore so that you will not be aground if the wind changes, but not so far off as to encourage someone to anchor between you and the shore.

Kerry and I took our first kayak ride today. We like doing it, but Kerry has a difficult time getting out of the kayak so she keeps her entries and exits to a minimum. But she does like to paddle slowly around the shoreline and look at all the features.

Peter picked us up promptly at 5:00. We took raincoats with us as there was rain in the forecast. We had a nice cocktail hour before dinner. Peter and I had resolved to figure out how to get the state of charge for his batteries to display on his Magnum charger/inverter monitor before dinner. We failed at that, but it might be because he is missing one piece of needed equipment. More research tomorrow.

Marianna had a delicious homemade Spanish tortilla dinner for us complete with her homemade sriracha sauce. And she figured out how Voyager's underwater lights work. While we thought they were designed to be sexy at anchor, that is not their purpose. They are designed to illuminate the dingy davits when docking. They had not been able to figure out what turned them on and off. Marianna discovered that it's the davit remote that controls the lights.

It started to rain very hard right after Peter dropped us off back at Annie. Peter and I are on for early morning fishing tomorrow. The mates have planned a bacon and blueberry brunch for us after fishing.

  1. Hi Don and crew! I have finally caught up with the adventures of Annie and Voyager. Wonderful reading your humorous takes on life onboard! Can’t wait to do this trip in the future on Eventide. Love just the plain VYC sticker, no other text. Hope all is well and Kerry’s wrists are back to normal. Take care. Have fun and do not have any rocks named after you.

    1. Sorry to say we may have to name a rock after John Robertson.

  2. I love Covered Portage. The first time I was there was 1984 with Marcy and Will and Andrew, We moored against the rock face at the far end of the cove with 2 feet of water under us on Datum IV. We could walk on and off the boat. I think we stayed for 3 days. KIP

Continued kudos to Don for chronicling our journey
    together ❣️
Covered Portage is one of my favorite spots - surrounded by the granite cliffs and lush coniferous forests- the crystal waters seem to magically suspend not only the anchored vessels but our souls as well. It is my happy place ❤️
